They were all too occupied with mopping-up operations. To the villagers of Green Hill, however, they were very important indeed. Chickens, pigs, even clean washing-these were valuable possessions in the chaotic aftermath of war. Worst of all, the thieves, who always came at night, had poisoned every watchdog except yes, except toothless old Hobo who lived with his master, Isaac the hermit, in the forest on the south side of the lake. Could old Isaac…? Was this a clue ? With a characteristic mixture of enthusiasm and nonchalance, the gang of friends, Koko, Tom, Cockroach, Blacky and Bozo (the youngest, who could see better at night than in the daytime) determined to sift the mystery for themselves. There were not many suspects, but the boys found plenty of room for speculation, and energy for action, even if Blacky, the eldest, did wonder from time to time whether they weren’t being a bit childish. Amateur detection is liable to land the detectives in some rather comical misadventures, and there were moments when each boy wished he was safely home in bed instead of out in the menacing dark, but in the end the robbers were caught. The triumph wasn’t quite what the boys had imagined, but the Mystery of Green Hill was solved, and at least one of the gang had learned the truth about black coffee! ; L’immagine se disponibile, corrisponde alla copia in vendita.
