These portfolios are in chronological order and cover the time period from 1896 to 1910. The extraordinarily extensive material provides an excellent overview of the development of the glass medium during the Art Nouveau movement. Nearly 250 plates, the majority in color, show more than 900 fascinatingly beautiful examples of original patterns. Every single portfolio included in this book represents an unusual bibliophilic treasure, since very few—often only one copy—still exist worldwide. Perseverance and the use of modern computers were necessary to locate and compile the individual portfolios. Yet despite years of intensive research in libraries throughout Europe (Germany, the former German Democratic Republic, Austria, Switzerland, Hungary, Holland, England to mention a few) and overseas (primarily the United States), some portfolios could not be found. The few existing copies of the portfolios that were located are often in such desolate condition that they are understandably no longer available for loan from libraries. For this reason, the plates included in this book are the work of others, namely the photographers of the respective libraries. With regard to contrast, focus, and color reproduction, there are slight qualitative differences between the individual portfolios. One of the main reasons why so few of these portfolios still exist today might be that most of them merely consist of individual unbound sheets without any supplemental text whatsoever.
