Un’opera fondamentale per comprendere la storia della miniatura medievale e rinascimentale, il ruolo dei committenti e l’evoluzione delle tecniche decorative. Miniatures in medieval manuscripts continue to fascinate modern viewers, and major exhibitions of illuminated codices—whether in Paris, London, New York, Milan, or Heidelberg—regularly attract over 100,000 visitors. Much of this appeal lies in the chance to see precious treasures otherwise inaccessible: unique volumes once owned by emperors, kings, and princes, often worth millions. We are also captivated by the glittering gold with which artists enriched their miniatures, displaying both their skill and the wealth of their patrons. This book leads directly into the world of medieval illumination, presenting 167 of the most beautiful and significant manuscripts from A.D. 400 to 1600. No comparable survey of twelve centuries of codices had previously been attempted. Although the focus is primarily European, 23 manuscripts from Persia, Turkey, and India testify to the flourishing of Oriental illumination. The manuscripts are arranged chronologically. Each is introduced with a concise summary of its essential details—date and place of origin, format, extent, language, content, miniaturist, decoration, patron, and provenance—allowing the reader to grasp its context at a glance. Wherever possible, folios and miniatures are reproduced in their original format, and to convey the richness of the originals, 212 pages are printed with gold as an additional colour. A comprehensive appendix presents 20 further important manuscripts not included in the main section. Biographies of the artists offer insight into the lives and work of the miniaturists, while a glossary explains technical terms. A full bibliography provides additional references for further study. ; Scheda a cura di Equilibri libreria. L’immagine corrisponde alla copia in vendita. 011.83.90.381
